Precautions for using adhesive

2026-05-13

Adhesives are indispensable auxiliary materials in home decoration, industrial production, and daily maintenance. From small tasks such as wallpaper and wall covering installation, door and window sealing, to large ones like panel bonding and building material fixation, the use of adhesives is essential. When many people use adhesives, they only focus on the bonding effect, but ignore details such as operational norms, environmental protection and safety, storage and protection. At the very least, problems such as poor bonding, cracking and debonding, mold and yellowing may occur. At worst, there may be health hazards and construction safety risks.

Whether it's household environmentally friendly glutinous rice glue, nail-free glue, glass glue, or industrial-specific adhesives, it is essential to follow the standardized usage requirements. Below, we have compiled easy-to-understand and directly applicable precautions for adhesive usage, covering the entire construction process. This will help everyone avoid operational errors, extend the bonding life, and maintain safety and environmental protection standards.

1. Preparation before construction: If the foundation is not solid, all subsequent efforts will be in vain
Many cases of bonding failure and subsequent issues stem from inadequate preparation before construction, and this step cannot be omitted.
Strictly clean the bonding surface to eliminate oil stains and dust
The surfaces of walls, boards, and building materials to be bonded should be cleaned in advance to remove dust, oil stains, floating ash, release agents, water stains, rust, and loose impurities. An unclean base surface will directly hinder the adhesion of the adhesive to the substrate, leading to a significant decrease in bonding strength and potential issues such as edge warping, detachment, and hollowing in the later stages. It is recommended to moderately sand the smooth base surface to enhance the grip, and the wet base surface should be completely dried before construction.
Control the temperature and humidity of the construction environment, and avoid inclement weather
For most adhesives, the suitable application temperature ranges from 5℃ to 35℃, with relative humidity controlled between 40% and 70%. Too low a temperature can slow down the curing process of the adhesive, deteriorate its fluidity, and result in substandard bonding strength; while too high a temperature and excessive humidity can lead to bubbling, sagging, uneven curing, and the growth of mold. Outdoor construction is strictly prohibited during rainy days, humid days, and windy and dusty weather. For indoor construction, doors and windows should be closed to control humidity and prevent moisture from returning to the substrate surface.
Check product information in advance to prevent using the wrong adhesive
Before use, it is essential to verify the product model, scope of application, and shelf life. It is strictly prohibited to use adhesive beyond its designated scope. For instance, wallpaper-specific glutinous rice adhesive cannot be used for bonding metal or stone materials, nail-free adhesive cannot replace structural adhesive for load-bearing purposes, and environmentally friendly home decoration adhesive cannot be mixed with industrial inferior adhesive. Additionally, confirm the product ratio. Two-component adhesives must be mixed strictly according to the instructions, stirred evenly, and arbitrarily changing the ratio will directly lead to product failure.
Take personal protective measures and ensure adequate ventilation in advance
Before construction, open the doors and windows in advance to ensure good ventilation. During mixing and construction, wear gloves and masks according to the type of product to avoid direct contact of adhesive with skin, mouth, nose, and eyes. Especially for chemically synthesized adhesives and solvent-based adhesives, basic protection measures should be taken.

II. Construction operation specifications: details determine the bonding lifespan
Standardized operation is the core to ensure bonding effectiveness and avoid rework in the later stage. The general core criteria for different types of adhesives are as follows:
Control the amount of glue applied, ensuring even thickness, no missed areas, and no accumulation
Applying too much glue does not necessarily make it stronger. Excessive glue application can slow down the curing process of the adhesive, making it difficult for the interior to dry completely. In the later stages, problems such as softening, mold growth, glue spillage contaminating the finish, and cracking in the bonding layer may occur. Applying too thin a layer of glue or missing areas can lead to issues such as hollowing, insufficient bonding area, and debonding with warped edges.
Correct operation: Apply the adhesive uniformly and thinly, ensuring full coverage of the base surface without any gaps, accumulations, or bubbles. For thick adhesives, control the thickness of the application. After bonding, press moderately to exhaust air and ensure that the bonding surface is fully adhered.
Strictly adhere to the designated drying and curing times, and refrain from disturbing it beforehand
After applying adhesive, it is usually necessary to let it sit and dry to evaporate excess moisture and solvent. Once it reaches the initial bonding state, it can be bonded. It is strictly prohibited to bond immediately after application. After bonding and fixation, the curing and maintenance time specified in the product manual must be strictly followed. Before complete curing, it is strictly prohibited to touch, pull, squeeze, or move the bonding area, and it cannot bear any load.
Many people tear off the adhesive tape and move the substrate in advance, resulting in misalignment and detachment of the bond, thus wasting all previous efforts. For daily household adhesives, complete curing usually takes 24-72 hours, and the curing time needs to be appropriately extended in low temperature and high humidity environments.
Allocate as needed, adjust as required, to avoid waste and spoilage
Two-component adhesive, starch-based environmentally friendly adhesive that requires mixing with water, should be mixed in small amounts but multiple times. The amount mixed at one time should be controlled within the range that can be used up. The mixed adhesive has a shelf life, and if it exceeds the time limit, it may solidify, lose effectiveness, or deteriorate. It cannot be reused by adding water or adhesive, as this will affect the bonding effect and damage the environmental performance.
Promptly handle any glue overflow to avoid contaminating the finish
If adhesive overflows or gets on the finish, floor, or furniture surface during construction, it should be wiped clean with a clean, damp cloth and a special cleaning agent before the adhesive dries and cures. Once the adhesive is fully cured, it will not only be difficult to clean, but it can also scratch and stain finishes such as wallpaper, boards, and stone, causing irreversible damage.
